Today, more women are stepping up to serve in local government, to make a difference in their communities – and beyond. Their passion, professionalism and sacrifice deserve to be recognized, supported and sustained.

Women who run for a state or local office encounter unique challenges even though they are highly qualified. It is more difficult for them to raise money, feel they are ready, and get elected.

That’s why the McHenry County Democratic Women (McCDW) Political Action Committee (PAC) was created in the summer of 2021. Founded by three McHenry County women dedicated to democracy: Cathy Johnson, Mary Mahady and Ruth Scifo. This mighty group has grown in membership, fundraising and awareness. It’s singular focus of supporting women candidates is making a difference in government in McHenry County.

Centered on encouraging women in the political arena, McCDW can change the landscape, and change the future through our actions and collaborations. Help us in our mission as we:

• educate and train qualified individuals;

• offer campaign strategy and tactics;

• provide needed financial support.

Why Do We Need Women Candidates?

Research and practical experience suggest that women often excel as local government leaders because they bring diverse life experiences, prioritize community well-being and family needs, and employ collaborative-consensus building leadership.

According to Strategic Government Resources, women in local government are often at the forefront of change, bringing fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and a commitment to equitable solutions.

Lived experiences of women as parents, daughters, and working professionals enable them to bring a holistic viewpoint to decision-making, ensuring a wider range of community issues area considered and addressed in policy formation.

Female leaders are more likely to advocate for social welfare programs, prioritize issues often overlooked such as education, public health, child welfare and domestic violence prevention, which benefit the community.

In leadership studies, women have been rated higher than men in competencies such as taking initiative, practicing self-development, displaying high integrity and honesty, and problem solving, all crucial for effective public service.

The visibility of women in leadership roles serves as an inspiration, breaking down barriers and encouraging more girls, and underrepresented groups to pursue public service careers and civic engagement.

These varied experiences and leadership styles incorporated by women contribute to more effective, equitable and sustainable local governance.

More women serving in local government will improve the quality and efficacy of our county.
